This past summer, I raised monarchs from caterpillars and affixed tracking devices called nanotags to five of the largest adults. This allowed me to see how long they stuck around Fields Pond before migrating (presumably) south. I'll go over my experimental procedure, including how I tagged monarch butterflies safely and handled them without breaking them, and my results.
Wesley Hutchins
is a sophomore student from UMaine at Orono. He has been working on this project under Dr. Amber Roth from the university. His major is wildlife ecology and he has had a passion for wildlife of all varieties his whole life, with a special focus on insects.
